Former NFL coach and commentator Tony Dungy, U.S. Olympian Shawn Johnson, NFL quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Kurt Warner and running back Shaun Alexander, MLB pitcher Mariano Rivera, and NASCAR owner and NFL coach Joe Gibbs are just a few of the sports celebrities who have shared their faith in books and interviews. And it’s not just the athletes who publicly profess their faith; watch the Emmys, Oscars or Grammys, and you will hear most winners giving praise to God for their good fortune to be an actor or entertainer.
Here is my advice when listening to celebrities share their faith in written or spoken word: Take it at face value. It’s not our place to judge or dissect every word we hear from public figures. Search the Internet long enough, and you will find some website saying something bad about almost anyone. Maybe it’s true, and maybe it’s not.
I, for one, enjoy hearing celebrities share their faith. It gives me encouragement as a follower of God to know that they are giving a “shout out” to God for their success in life. Let’s be honest — aren’t we all in the positions we’re in because our Father in Heaven gave us life?
How often do you use your platform to give a shout out to God? You don’t have to be famous to share how your life has been empowered by God’s Word. Take time today and share how God’s Word has changed your life. Explain how it has given you the power to succeed in your daily life as an employee, parent or spouse. God’s Word is powerful and alive! It changes lives!
